OUT WITH THE NEW, IN WITH THE OLDšŸ‘µ

by Megan Jones

Whatā€™s up winos,

Twice in a row! Do I spoil u or what?

Danā€™s off sunnin himself in France (read: visiting all our producers and generally actually working really hard) and Fionnā€™s on a little jolly in Austria (I remember whenĀ IĀ used to get invited on work jollies, now I just have to approve the time off for other people to do themā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦ā€¦.). So itā€™s just me! Or u and me, to be more precise. No better company to be in.

Since the resident Aussie is out of office, I thought weā€™d take a lil break from the new world onslaught and head back to the old one. Just for a bit! Donā€™t stress, the Straya specials will be back next week.

Nothing screams old world to me more than Burgundy, and we just got a delivery of some of the finest. Jules Desjourneys, aka Fabien Duperray, who also moonlights as one of Burgundyā€™s finest wine agents, makes seriously primo Chardonnay from sites in Macon-VerzĆ©, Saint-VĆ©ran and three of the Pouillys (LochĆ©, Vinzelles and FuissĆ©). Seriously, this is buy on sight gear. Or I, for one, buy it on sight. Be more like me!

Down at the lower end of things (not that Desjourneys really has a lower end, but for argumentā€™s sake) weā€™ve got hisĀ Macon-Prisse, zippy, tingly and laden with texture, and hisĀ Macon-Fuisse, powerful and full of punchy drive. Levelling up a touch, weā€™ve got hisĀ Pouilly-Fuisse, full, fresh and mineral, aĀ Pouilly-Vinzelles, luscious and zesty, and aĀ Pouilly-Loche, on the saline, baked goods end of the spectrum. Up at the pointy end, thereā€™s the ā€˜Vignes de la Coteā€™, the fullest of the lot infused with a gentle creaminess, and finally the ā€˜Vignes Blanchesā€™, unveiling layer after layer of ripe stone fruit and baking spices. This is a proper lesson in the breadth and complexity of Chardonnay. I reckon get one of each to compare. Yes? Yes.

While weā€™re still in Burgs, something for the red heads - two cuvees from Yann Durieux, serious cult status producer. Get around theĀ LDX, pure, elegant and refined, or theĀ PV, a spice-laden Pernand-Vergelesses. He also makes a spankingĀ Aligote, coz heā€™s a people pleaser I guess. Gwannn. You know you want to. And speaking of cult, there are somehow still twoĀ Lā€™Anglore packsĀ sitting on the website twiddling their thumbs? Are you guys okay??

Finally, throwing a bone to those of us (aka me) who donā€™t have Burgundy money - a quartet of wallet friendly Italian whites. Praise! AĀ fun n funky Vermentino, two easy going Corteses, one on theĀ floralĀ side and one on theĀ citrusyĀ side, and a volcanic, racyĀ blendĀ of Inzolia and Moscato Bianco. Wines to have stocked in the fridge at all times, in case of, um, emergencies.

Last thing from me - our tasting with Wasted Wine Club is kicking off tonight at 6.30pm sharp and weā€™ve still got someĀ spots, if youā€™re a live-by-the-seat-of-your-pants kind of person who makes plans at the last minute. Canā€™t wait to c u there, itā€™s gonna be good craic, as the kids say.

Love u!

xoxo
