What is Natural Wine?

What is Natural Wine?

Natural wine is wine made with as little intervention as possible — both in the vineyard and in the cellar. No heavy processing, no unnecessary additives, and a focus on letting the grapes and the place do the talking.

At its core, it’s about farming properly and not messing things up afterwards.

How natural wine is made

Most natural wines start with organic or biodynamic farming. That means no synthetic chemicals and a focus on healthier soils and vines.

In the cellar, fermentation happens with native yeasts (the ones already on the grapes), and winemakers avoid adding or removing things unless absolutely necessary.

  • No industrial additives
  • No heavy filtration
  • Minimal sulphur (sometimes none at all)

What does natural wine taste like?

It depends — and that’s kind of the point.

Some are clean, fresh, and precise. Others are a bit wilder, with more texture or funk. Natural wine isn’t one style, it’s a spectrum.

If you’re new, start with something lighter and more approachable before diving into the deeper end.

Natural vs organic vs biodynamic

These terms get mixed up a lot:

  • Organic – farming without synthetic chemicals
  • Biodynamic – organic plus a more holistic, soil-focused approach
  • Natural wine – low intervention winemaking (often using organic/biodynamic grapes)

Most natural wines are organic or biodynamic, but not all organic wines are natural.
