Vino di Anna, Vigna Pirao Rosso 2022
Place: Etna, Italy
Grape: Nerello Mascalese
Vibe: Gorgeous
This is a special wine, and despite never visiting the vineyard, I feel like I know it deeply. At 1,000 metres above the town of Randazzo, there are around 900 surviving pre-phylloxera Nerello Mascalese bush vines that remain, to this day, completely untreated. Eric call's this his 'Garden of Eden'. In the cellar, this fruit is supplemented with some newer plantings from massale selections.
The wine then spends time in both demi-john and wine globes. Essentially giving us the purest expressions of Mount Etna you can find. Ethereal and hauntingly perfumed, it carries an almost Pinot Noir-like profile. Just 600btls produced. ABV: 13.5%
