Suertes del Marqués are part of a new wave of winemakers in Tenerife maximising the potential of the existing heritage vines on the island, many of which are over 100 years old. The vines, plus the native varieties they grow (Listán Negro and Blanco, Tintilla and Baboso Negro), plus the volcanic soils they grow in, make for some pretty memorable wines. They use a unique trellising system called Cordón Trenzado, whereby the cordon is formed by canes twisted over one another, and the vine cordon keeps growing, sometimes as long as ten metres. Fermentation is done using wild yeasts in concrete and foudre, and grapes are picked early to maintain freshness and precision. Get your chops round these, they’re really something.
