Sophie Evans, Electric Field 2024
Place: Kent, England
Grape: Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Bacchus, Seyval Blanc, Reichensteiner
Vibe: Energetic
Just the second release since her first vintage. A big blend from her home site, with exceptional farming at the edge of the Romney Marshes, vines sitting atop a little chalk seam. 2024 was a tough year in England, cool and pretty wet, but Sophie has once again produced something with real energy and character. Everything de-stemmed, crushed by foot before fermenting in steel. Things then rest for a year in tank and demijohn before bottling with a teeny tiny bit of sulphur.
Pretty elderflower aromatics, with the fruit darting between citrus, rhubarb and something more orchard-y. Not quite a white, red, rosé or orange. A category-defining field blend in the truest sense, and utterly delicious too. Just 380 bottles produced, so grab one whilst you can. ABV: 8.5%
