Pierre is just 37, and his winemaking journey started only a few years ago when he returned home to recover a parcel of vines after the passing of his grandfather. Based in the small village of Husseren-les-Châteaux, one of the highest elevations in Alsace, he works just under 4 hectares scattered down the steep slopes close to home. You won't see it on the labels, but almost half of these vineyards, planted on a mix of clay and limestone, are classed as Grand Cru.

Before this, Pierre spent years as an environmental engineer in Paris. Soil health already a passion, his ambition was to work with as few chemicals in the vineyard as possible, leaning instead on biodynamic treatments, teas and essential oils to keep the vines healthy. In the cellar he opts for gentle macerations on both red and white to coax the aromatics out of some of the more austere varieties. Most wines see élevage in barrique, no additions at any stage.

Still early in his journey, the wines already show wonderful balance. Enjoyable young but with real potential to age. Kind of like if Labet ventured a little further north. No bad thing.
