Beaujolais Nouveau is finally upon us. Iām sure you are all clued up on this third Thursday of November by now so I won't bore you with deets. Is this day just clever marketing? A way of getting meh wines out the door in incredibly fast fashion? An exercise in producing thin, overly tutti-frutti wine that tastes more like a sweet shop than a bottle of the good stuff? To me, yes. Perhaps, Iām just cynical.
So whilst, a novelty glass is fine by me anything more and itās a hard pass. Iād rather celebrate the region by drinking the ACTUAL good stuff. Hence, weāll be exclusively pouring elite bottles at our Big Beaujolais Party 2.0 tonight. You know that party we have been banging on about for the past month. If you havenāt heard then where have you been? If youāve left things incredibly last minute then we have a tiny handful of tickets left online HERE, plus if youāre extra nice we might let you squeeze in and pay on the door. No promises though, so head down early to avoid disappointment.
Pretty pumped at the selection that's gonna be on show! So excited in fact Iāll tell you a little bit about the wines you might see me pouring tonight right now. When I spotted a few cases from Yann Bertrand arriving at the warehouse yesterday my eyes literally lit up. I drank a few of his wines a while back and was mighty impressed. I can remember them as clear as day; so pure, so fresh, so delicious. Yann works with old, organically farmed vines and opts for long cool whole cluster ferments in the cellar. He bottles with zero sulphur too, just how I like āem. If you canāt make it tonight then I highly recommend some retail therapy to help soothe the painā¦
His Beaujolais Lantignie 2022 comes from younger vines that ensure plenty of youthful charm. This is an area fighting for Cru status, and itās clear to see why. Quality for days due to the deep granitic soils they have meaning there is intensity, and real lift despite technically being at the village level. His Saint Amour is equally graceful. Delicate, vibrantly red-fruited and with a whole heap of florals. Honest and a touch of something a little earthy on the palate makes for an effortless drink. Bring on the raclette.
Lastly, Iāll be showing off his Julienasā¦ 100%. Heās 100% right, this is 100% delicious. Again being a northern Cru I find there to be plenty of alluring aromatics on the nose. Crushed violets, wild berries and a little smidge of sweet spice is thrown in for good measure. There is such energy to these wines, itās hard to put into words. They just feel so alive.
