😇HOLY TRINITY 😇

by Megan Jones

Heya, Fionn this Thursday.

We’re back into silly season, where the wines land thick and fast. Love it, my back not so much. This week is top-heavy. Sorry, not sorry. We’re doin’ the Holy Trinity of elite French wine regions. Jura, Burgundy, and Champagne. Lucky you, unlucky wallet.

Straight to it with some new Dolomies. I love these wines. Always have, always will. They beautifully capture everything good about the Jura. Textured whites with searing freshness. Reds that are a joy to drink and light on their feet. I also think considering the quality and fanatic hype around the region that these are pretty keenly priced (for now). Farmers first, they tend their 5ha of vines scattered around 10 plots in five villages, including the prestigious Château-Chalon. Wild ferments, no fining or filtration and from 2020 no sulphur has been used during vinification. As a result, the wines have gained both clarity and depth. Celines’ time spent with Badoz, and St-Pierre and Labet in particular are evident in the glass.

We currently have a nice splattering across multiple vintages that have just recently been joined by some delicious new faces. Highlights included a super reasonable Chard and one of the better macerations. A caviste in France told me this plot was being ripped out and this will be one of the last vintages. Well, this is what I thought he was saying… Unsurprisingly I haven’t yet fully grasped French fluently. This is purely anecdotal but could explain the measly 2 bottles dished out by the importer…

Baby Bacchus Aviet with a new Ploussard that glides. Big ocean spray, cranberry juice vibe. A little spice, and earthy intrigue to elevate this from mere glou glou. So into it.

We’re just down the road to the next elite region. Yup, a bit of Burg! We got some odds and ends from a Mr Moreau. This time it’s Benoit not Alex but both brothers can do no wrong. Benoit is big on Biodynamics and likes to be experimental in the vines. Braiding the vine canopy was a new one for me. Whatever he’s doing it certainly working. Bourgogne Blanc punches above its weight and as we get into Grand Cru territory the quality, as you expect, exponentially improves.

Would be rude not to mention this new Pataille that is considered ‘entry-level’. Almost laughable, and very nice on price for another man who doesn’t miss.

Also, last week I dropped in a bit of Dandelion that flew out. I know a few of you missed out so I did the thing again and begged for more. Here they are. There is only so much begging a boy can do so get in quick.

Completing the trinity with a wee drop of Champagne. Mr Prevost doing what he does best here and here. These speak for themselves and come in pathetic quantities so get a wiggle on. Oh, and just for the heck of it you can squabble over this :)

T-Minus two weeks until our big Beaujolais bash. Unlimited wine, lots of cheese, me pourin’. What more could you want? I had originally booked the whole week off to celebrate my Birthday but I love the cause so much I begged for the shift back. Gonna be a blast, come wish me a belated birthday!
